Trip Summary

As an alternative to the classic Inca Trail, the Salkantay Trek is one of the best alternative routes to Machu Picchu — and arguably one of the most complete experiences. The Salkantay Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most sought-after and popular treks in Cusco, second only to the famous Inca Trail. It is undoubtedly the best alternative route to experience the ancient paths once walked by our ancestors, the Incas. The most breathtaking moment of this journey is reaching the highest point: Salkantay Pass, located at around 4,700 meters (15,420 feet) above sea level, near the stunning Salkantay snow-capped peak. But the beauty doesn’t end there — the lush, dramatic valleys of the Cusco jungle will also leave you in awe.

📍 Location: Salkantay – Located in the Vilcabamba mountain range (Alternative trek to Machu Picchu)

🥾 Tour Type: Trekking, cultural, and adventure

💪 Recommended for: Those with moderate to good physical condition

⛰️ Difficulty: Challenging

📌 Important: To include both Humantay Lake (the turquoise lagoon) and Llaqtapata (an incredible viewpoint + campsite with distant views of Machu Picchu), we begin the trek a day earlier in the afternoon — that’s why it’s 5 days and 5 nights.

📆 Season: March 1st to January 10th

🚫 Closed: January 10th to February 28th (due to the rainy season)

Day 3: Loreta – Sahuayaku – Coffee Farm – Llactapata (Camp facing Machu Picchu)

Coffee, Culture & Inca Trails

After breakfast, we begin a short but unforgettable day. First, we'll visit a local organic coffee farm to learn about coffee cultivation and taste freshly brewed local varieties. You'll also see avocado and orange trees and discover how this region exports coffee globally.

Hike to Llactapata Viewpoint

We continue hiking for around 2.5 hours along an original Inca Trail toward Llactapata. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the Santa Teresa Valley. Once at Llactapata (2,700 m), you’ll be rewarded with a distant but clear view of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and Machu Picchu Mountain — a perfect spot for photos and reflection.

After exploring the Llactapata ruins, a short downhill walk leads us to our camp where we’ll have lunch. You’ll have time to relax and soak in the views of Machu Picchu at sunset. In the evening, enjoy a warm drink and a delicious dinner, followed by stargazing under the Milky Way — just like the ancient Inca astronomers once did.

A highlight here is the powerful 300-meter waterfall that supplies electricity to the Cusco region.

Continue hiking along the railway for about 3 hours, following the same path Hiram Bingham took when he rediscovered Machu Picchu. Along the way, explore Mandor Farm — rich with birds, orchids, and fruit trees.
